Those that do

It goes without saying that it’s important that everyone involved in the greening of the firm know exactly what’s expected of them. Remember, it may be necessary to provide people with appropriate training so that they are competent to carry out their tasks. In order to make the project more effective, take a formal approach to identifying people’s environmental training and development, it will pay back in terms of better performance. It also helps to have any procedures documented so that should key people leave, the ‘how to’ information remains in-house.

Talking loud and clear

Part of your plan will include communicating progress. However, to get the best from the greening process it’s important to detail what you’ll be communicating, to whom, how often and why you’re doing it. This approach holds good for both internal and external communications. Don’t forget that gathering external parties feedback on what you’re doing can be helpful in shaping future iterations of your 5C program.

Prepared for the unthinkable?

It may well be unthinkable, but it may well be possible. Considering what could go wrong makes sense as it enables you to plan and prepare for those events that although unwanted might just occur. Being prepared is one thing; actually testing your preparedness is another, so remember to check that your plans work, even if it’s a desk-top exercise.

Indicating right

In previous steps the emphasis has been on operational indicators, now it’s time to consider indicators that track how well your system works. Without these indicators how will you know how well the systems you’ve put in place work?
